Independent Back Translation
A suitably qualified, independent linguist translates your existing target text back into the source language without seeing the original.
Deliverable: back-translated document.
PangeaVox · Independent Translation Review
See what your translated document communicates — in the language you know.
Back translation turns an existing translation into the original language, independently of the source text. Used with a structured comparative review, it can uncover changes in meaning, ambiguity and terminology that merit investigation.
We offer independent back translation, documented comparison and reconciliation for research, clinical, medical, legal and other business-critical content.
Independent linguists · Human-led assessment · Traceable findings
Point to investigate: “Every 12 hours” and “twice a day” may differ in timing. A reviewer checks the intended concept and the original-language translation before recommending a change.
Fictional example for illustration only; not medical advice or a client project.
The method
Back translation, also called reverse translation, means translating a completed target-language text back into its source language. The back translator should not have access to the original document, so that its wording cannot influence the result.
The original and back-translated versions can then be compared by a separate reviewer. A difference is a signal to examine, not automatic proof that the forward translation is wrong. Natural phrasing and cultural adaptation can produce legitimate differences.
Select the right level of assurance
Choose a standalone deliverable or a more complete review workflow. We agree the scope before work begins.
A suitably qualified, independent linguist translates your existing target text back into the source language without seeing the original.
Deliverable: back-translated document.
An independent reviewer compares the source with the back translation and documents possible changes in meaning, omissions, additions or ambiguous concepts.
Deliverables: back translation and discrepancy log.
Findings are discussed with the relevant linguists and, where appropriate, subject-matter specialists. Decisions and justified amendments are recorded.
Deliverables: reviewed versions, resolution log and final summary.
Where precision matters
Patient information, study materials and clinical outcome assessments (COAs), including patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaires, as part of a suitably specified validation process.
Risk-sensitive instructions, safety information, labels and specialist medical content when an additional meaning check is appropriate.
Contracts, policies, consent wording and regulated communications where a separate reviewer needs visibility of potential semantic changes.
Questionnaires, interview guides, market research and other instruments requiring consistency of concepts across languages and cultures.
A transparent workflow
Agree content, language variants, project purpose, independence requirements and the level of reporting.
An independent linguist works from the translated text, without access to the original source.
When commissioned, a separate reviewer compares the original and back translation, classifying questions rather than treating every wording change as an error.
Where included, the team consults context and relevant specialists, resolves discrepancies and records the reasoning behind the final wording.
Recognised frameworks
We deliver the commissioned translation, independent review and reconciliation stages in accordance with the applicable requirements of ISO 17100:2015 and the agreed project specifications developed in line with ISO 11669:2024. When the brief includes structured translation evaluation, we follow the relevant ISO 5060:2024 guidance. For clinical instruments, the approved study protocol and applicable ISPOR good-practice requirements govern the workflow. We check every commissioned deliverable against these requirements before release.
Evidence for the next decision
A readable source-language rendition of the target document, with layout or segment alignment where agreed.
For review packages: affected passages, observed differences, interpretation questions and recommended follow-up.
For reconciliation packages: resolution decisions, justifications, agreed changes and a concise final summary.
Confidential and accountable
Professional linguists remain responsible for the independent back translation and any commissioned comparative review. Automated tools are not a substitute for qualified assessment; any proposed AI-assisted workflow must be agreed separately, with suitable confidentiality controls.
For patient-identifiable materials or protected health information (PHI), contact us before transferring files so that an appropriate secure process can be agreed.

Proofreading checks a text for language and presentation issues. Back translation independently recreates the source-language meaning from an existing translation; comparative review then examines potential semantic differences.
No. It is a diagnostic method. Both genuine errors and acceptable linguistic or cultural variations can produce differences, and some defects may remain undetected. Findings must be interpreted in context.
For a blinded independent back translation, no. The comparison is handled separately after the back translation is complete. Any deviations from this workflow should be specified in the brief.
No universal requirement applies to every document or study. Instrument-owner requirements, a clinical protocol and applicable good-practice guidance determine whether back translation and broader linguistic validation are appropriate.
No. Linguistic validation of clinical outcome assessments can also include dual forward translation, reconciliation, clinician or developer review, cognitive debriefing and documentation.
Yes. We can organise an independent back translation and, if requested, a separate comparative review without involving the original provider.
AI-supported approaches may be considered for a separately agreed research or supplementary workflow, subject to content risk, confidentiality and human oversight. We do not replace blinded human back translation with automated output by default.
Tell us the original and translated languages, regional variants, document type, approximate length, intended use, deadline and whether you require comparison or reconciliation. We can advise on secure file transfer for sensitive content.
